Excellence in teaching and research is an integral aspect of the Department of Economics and Finance''s mission. As a leading financial centre in Asia, Hong Kong needs graduates with cutting-edge knowledge in modern economics and finance to cope with rapid regional development. Our department takes an innovative approach in a continuous effort to provide Hong Kong with young executives and analysts it needs. We offer three undergraduate degrees, three taught Master''s degrees, and two research degrees: BBA (Hons) Finance, BBA (Hons) Business Economics, BBA (Hons) Financial Engineering, MSc in Finance, MSc in Financial Engineering, MSc in Banking, MPhil, and PhD. In 1993, we began to offer the Master of Science in Finance, the first of its kind in Hong Kong. In 1996, the Department initiated its second Master''s programme specializing in Financial Engineering, the first such programme in Asia. The MSc Banking programme was offered from September 1997 with a special feature that the Hong Kong Monetary Authority delivered some banking regulation courses.
The Department recognizes that effective teaching is essential to achieve its goals. The Department has invited some prominent figures from the business community as adjunct professors to lecture our students on recent developments in financial markets. We continually improve our teaching methods and use state-of-the-art technology to enrich each student''s learning experience. We were the first university to set up a simulated trading room in Hong Kong, and we are pioneers in establishing an experimental economics laboratory. Both facilities give students some invaluable experience in "real world" economics.
Besides regular teaching programmes, the Department organizes executive training programmes and undertakes consultancy projects. They promote communication and exchanges between our faculty members and outside practitioners. Since stock options were introduced to the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong in 1995, the Department has played an active role in organizing training programmes in stock options for practitioners.
One important mission of the Department is to pursue high quality scholarly research. The Department promotes research in financial and economic issues in the Asia-Pacific region. We have established an excellent research environment, including a productive and energetic research team. With the first-class research facilities provided by the City University, we anticipate continuing to play a leading role in research areas of economics and finance in the Asia-Pacific region.
We have established and maintained good relationships with major Chinese institutions, including the Central Communist Party School, the People''s Bank of China, and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Many of our faculty members work closely with faculty members at major universities in China, Japan, Canada and the United States on joint research projects.
We are a leading department in economics and finance in the Asia-Pacific region, and look forward to continuing to serve Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region in the exciting years ahead.
