Finance Major

General Finance | Corporate Finance | Investments | Banking & Financial Institutions | Federal Government Finance & Contracts

Finance careers vary widely in today’s complex, global economy. Among their many options, finance graduates find careers in banking, investments, corporate finance, and federal contract management. Graduates might help investment clients develop and monitor personal or corporate investment portfolios, manage a bank office and all its personnel, make multi-million dollar loans to corporations, take a private firm public so its stock can be traded on stock exchanges, or manage the budget of a multi-billion dollar federal project. The finance curriculum gives graduates the modern analytic principles of the discipline that prepare them to function in a wide variety of settings.

Students considering the professional certification examinations upon graduation, such as the Certified Cash Manager, Certified in Financial Management, the Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Financial Planner, or Chartered Financial Analyst, may need course work beyond the minimum requirements for the B.S.B.A. degree. Students are encouraged to identify the special requirements early in their academic careers.

The Department of Accounting and Finance offers five finance concentrations for the B.S.B.A. degree in finance: General Finance; Corporate Finance; Investments; Banking and Financial Institutions; and Federal Contract Management. The finance major is offered only during the day.

BRIEF HISTORY
The Department of Economics and the Department of Finance were created in 1947 within the College of Commerce and Business Administration. The two departments have since been educating students in the fields of economics and finance so that they succeed in the dynamic public and private sectors of our economy, government, and society. In 1950, the departments began to offer PhD programs in the two areas of studies and further expanded the graduate programs in 1961 to include the Masters of the Arts and Masters of Science as well. The two departments were combined in 1972 as were other departments in the business school and legal studies was incorporated into the department in 1976 as it was converted from business law. Currently, the Department of Economics, Finance, and Legal Studies resides on the second floor of Mary Hewell Alston Hall and continues to function as a department of teaching and research. The department抯 faculty stay on top of the latest developments in the fields of economics and finance so that they may pass these along to the growing number of students majoring in the areas of economics and finance.
