University of North Carolina at Asheville,Department of Economics

UNCA is a particularly good place to study economics due to our small class size, opportunities for research and emphasis on writing and thinking skills. We strive for quality interactions, both inside and outside the classroom. A special bonus is offered by the student-run Economics Club, which provides academic, career planning and social events attended by both students and faculty. Students interested in joining the economics club can get more information from its faculty advisor, Dr. Joseph Sulock.
Numerous academic awards await outstanding economics majors. These include membership in UNCA''s chapter of ODE -- the International Economics Honor Society (speak to Dr. Sulock if you qualify: at least 15 credit hours in economics and an economics GPA > 3.2) -- and receipt of the David Reiner Awards in Economics and Political Economy. Additional departmental citations are awarded each year recognizing outstanding performance in the major, overall scholastic achievement and service to the department and community. Some of these awards carry small stipends as described below.
Economics majors may, of course, apply for any general scholarship that the university offers. There are, however, a number of scholarships which you are more likely to get if you are an economics major. In fact, one scholarship is only for economics majors!
American Express Scholarship ($500 per year). Must be an economics major with an excellent academic record. Preference given to students from WNC area with an interest in a career in finance.
Joseph Reiner Scholarship in Memory of David Reiner (about $500 per year).
The department makes the following (monetary!!) awards each year. Each carries a stipend due to the generosity of alumni and friends of the department.
Outstanding Performance. For best overall performance in economics. The stipend is at least $100.
Outstanding Research. For best paper in Economics 490. The stipend is at least $100.
Outstanding Service. For exemplary service to the department, school and community. The stipend is at least $100.
David Reiner Awards (2). Two awards for students who excelled in economics and were employed while in college. Preference given to students from the WNC area. The stipend is at least $150.
Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Award for Excellence in Finance. For an understanding of financial concepts and the ability to use these concepts to solve real-world financial problems. The stipend is $200.
The economics department is located on the first floor of Karpen Hall. In addition to our offices, the economics wing includes a study lounge and a seminar room. The seminar room contains books, journals and computers used by the economics club and by student researchers. We are ably assited by our secretary, Kim Moore. Her office is KH 159.
The economics major requires 34 hours in economics plus 7 to 15 hours outside the department. This will allow you to select a wide variety of electives that satisfy other interests or meet particular career objectives. A double major is available to students with strong outside interests as is the economics minor.
