A Letter from the Chairman of the Department of Economics

  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

  Dear Friend of Carolina:
Thank for your interest in the Department of Economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department is home to 30 faculty members with 19 of those members holding the rank of Full Professor. The large size of our faculty allows us to offer a diverse set of courses for both undergraduates and graduate students. All of the standard fields such as macro and micro theory, econometrics, international, labor, public finance, industrial organization, and development economics are covered by our program. In addition, we offer areas in population and health economics as well as economic history, comparative systems and the history of economic thought .
Our undergraduate program typically has 400 majors who are required to take 7 economics courses with several of these courses required to be at an advanced level. The advanced courses are taught in small sections with typically between 25 and 35 students per section. For more information about the undergraduate program, contact Professor Alfred Field Jr..
The graduate program admits around 20 new students per year with more than 50% of the students funded. Students typically have either a research assistant ship or a teaching assistant ship. All of our teaching assistants are required to take our nationally acclaimed Teacher Training Program before they are allowed to teach for us. We typically are able to fund students for 4 years with some of the exceptional teachers in the 5th year class being allowed to teach independent sections. Our students are placed in both academic and non-academic posts upon the completion of their degree. For further information about our Graduate Program, contact Professor Bill Parke.
