Davidson College,Department of Economics

   OF
      ECONOMICS

The department encourages all Davidson students to gain a fundamental understanding of
economics as a vital part of their liberal arts education by taking Introductory Economics.
The program develops analytical, quantitative, writing, and oral expression skills useful
for leaders who use economics rather than teaching only technical economic tools.

The members of the department are proud of the students we mentor.
For example, our students have been very successful presenting their research
to professional audiences. Click here to see what they have done.

"The Phifer Award for 2006 is presented to a young scholar who has attained near-perfect mastery of economics. He is at home dealing with Lagrangian multipliers as with monetary policy, as with accounting debits and credits as with Heckscher-Ohlin international trade theory. He thinks with precision, has very strong research skills, and maintains excellent command of the big picture in addition to keeping track of the many details. In addition, he has met the demanding rigors facing an economics major while undergoing the demanding rigors facing a varsity athlete. The Department of Economics is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2006 A.K. Phifer Award is MacGregor John Wilkie." (Award Citation)

"Brendan Dete '05 received the Tommy Peters Award, named for a Davidson athlete who was called to serve in World War II and did so heroically, giving his life to save the lives of the men under his command. Dete was a first team, Mid-Major, All-American who earned honors as 2004 Pioneer Football League co-defensive player of the year. An economics and history major, Dete was named to Omicron Delta Kappa and Omicron Delta Epsilon.   He served on the Career Services Student Advisory Committee, tutored at Ada Jenkins Center, served as co-president of the Comparative Advantage Career Program, and held several offices with Phi Delta Theta Fraternity." (College Communications)

"The Student Government Association faculty award is given annually to a member of the faculty who has proven to be an asset in the classroom, and who has also displayed a strong interest in the lives of students outside the classroom. Fred H. Smith, MacArthur Assistant Professor of Economics is the 2004-2005 SGA Faculty Award recipient. Dr. Smith is seen cheering in the stands at sporting events and showing up with the town fire department when alarms go off at 3am. He serves on the committee on campus and religious life, the Student Conduct Council, the Alcohol Review Task Force, and is an advisor to Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. His insight and genuine desire to learn about the lives of Davidson College students is extraordinary." (College Communications)

The Department of Economics awards up to a total of $1,200 a year to subsidize formal study, research, field work, or community service consistent with the personal ideals of Ernest Finney Patterson, beloved professor of economics at Davidson College (1957-1979) and social activist. Completed applications, available here, are due by February 1 to the Department Chair.
