Welcome to the Economics Department
at the University of Denver!
Welcome to the Economics Homepage! We hope this site will answer your questions about what it’s like to study Economics at the University of Denver.
At the Undergraduate level we offer a BA in Economics through the Division of Social Sciences, and a BSBA degree through the Daniels College of business, as well as a minor. At the Graduate level we offer an MA with options for various specializations. MA students may also earn a dual degree between Economics and another MA program at the University of Denver.
We are a small program with an unusually broad-minded faculty devoted to cultivating innovative and critical thinking in students. We teach economics by presenting alternative perspectives on economic theory and by relating it to relevant historical and contemporary issues. Please feel free to explore our site for more detailed information on our programs and our faculty. We greatly appreciate your interest and wish to be as helpful to you as possible.

| - Economics seeks to understand how the social apparatus which governs the production and distribution of goods and services works. It examines the institutions that govern production and distribution nationally and globally, studying their historical evolution and analyzing their success or failure. There are several areas of study that we emphasize, including:
Ø The history of economic thought Ø International economic issues Ø The economics of money, banking, and financial markets Ø Environmental economics Ø Economics of the development of nations and regions Ø Issues of taxation and governmental economic activity Ø History of the American and European economies Ø Urban and regional economic issues
The study of Economics provides students with the knowledge required to be strong citizen-participants in economic affairs. Economics majors are prepared for a wide variety of careers in government, business, finance, politics, and education. It is also an ideal major for students who plan to pursue higher degrees in law, business, or international studies. |
| According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of economists and market and survey researchers is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2010. | | The Department of Economics at the University of Denver offers a BA to students in the Division of Social Sciences and a BSBA to students in the Daniels College of Business. At the graduate level, we offer an MA in Economics. Students can also study for a dual Master’s degree jointly with Economics and another discipline offered by the University (subject to approval by the Vice Provost of Graduate Studies). |
| The Economics program at DU values and cultivates innovative and critical thinking in both our faculty and our students. Because our faculty holds a broader view of economics than is found in most Economics programs in the U.S., our department is both unique and intellectually stimulating. We teach economics by presenting alternative perspectives on the historical and present-day relevance of our material, emphasizing written assignments and critical thinking, and relying on primary sources more heavily than the typical U.S. Economics curriculum does. In this way we teach our students to examine and question what they learn rather than digesting it as received truth. We hope that our department's approach to economics appeals to you and that you will consider studying with us. |
