Florida International University,Department of Economics

Florida International University is the largest university in South Florida. It is located in Miami which is near the tip of the Florida peninsula. The greater Miami area has a population of about 4 million people. Its climate is tropical with an average temperature of about 77o F (25o C). Although Miami is still best known for its resort and recreational opportunities (with about 15 million visitors entering the area each year), importing/exporting remains a top economic activity, and the city increasingly serves as the gateway between the United States and Central America, the Caribbean, and South America. Apart
from providing a full range of cultural activities, Miami's professional sport teams include the Dolphins in football, the Marlins in baseball, the Heat in basketball, and the Panthers in ice hockey.

Florida International University has a diverse student population (of about 30,000) attracting faculty and scholars from all over the world. The region's diverse ethnic cultures and languages, as well as the significant presence of international, commercial and cultural exchange, make Miami one of the most attractive areas for graduate study. The growth of the area's international
businesses and local government provides several sources of potential employment for our graduates.

The Department of Economics at Florida International University has entered a new phase of growth. As the university becomes more competitive with the top group of public research universities in the country, it is expected that the Department of Economics will contribute significantly to this development. The department places a strong emphasis on combining fields such as international economics, political economy, economic theory, urban economics, public economics, labor economics, and development economics (including Latin American and Caribbean studies as well as regional development problems). The department has a fast-growing, diverse group of faculty who are interested in both applied and theoretical issues. The department's programs are further enhanced by the presence of complementary graduate programs in the College of Arts and
Sciences, College of Business Administration, and the College of Urban and Public Affairs. In the Fall of 1996 we hosted the 1996 Southeastern Economic Theory and International Trade Conference.
