Louisiana State University, Department of Economics

"The strongest departments at LSU are political science, history, English, economics, geography, anthropology, philosophy, and religion." from Choosing the Right College: The Whole Truth About America's 100 Top Schools (William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan: 1998), p. 327, emphasis added.

The LSU Department of Economics, housed in the E.J. Ourso College of Business Administration, awards degrees at the bachelors, masters and doctoral levels. It is staffed by 20 full-time faculty members and hopes to expand further over the next few years. This reflects the department's commitment to continue a significant building effort--designed to upgrade both the size and quality of its program--that was begun in 1983. Substantial resources have been devoted to the identification and recruitment of senior faculty with established and nationally recognized research records. In the last few years, the department has been fortunate in adding several senior scholars to its program. In addition, the department houses and edits the Journal of Macroeconomics. To complement our building effort, the department will continue to recruit promising junior faculty. The overall objective is to make the department an even more respected member of the research community. In a recent update of the AER rankings of Economics Departments, our faculty ranked 38th in the country over the 1984-93 period--a significant improvement from our 101st ranking in the previous 5-year period (Economic Inquiry, April 1996).
