The discipline of Economics provides a solid foundation of the conceptual tools and analytical skills necessary for success in a broad range of professional and entrepreneurial careers. Economics teaches students how to abstract the key elements from complex situations, reason analytically from premises to policy conclusions and confront theory with evidence. Institutions as diverse as the nations most highly rated business schools and law schools require or strongly recommend that applicants have a background in Economics.
At UMASS Lowell the Economics Department designs its courses to stress these basic skills and its programs to provide curriculum flexibility to students interested in a broad range of career tracks. Students interested in careers as Economists are encouraged to acquire mathematics skills, take our more quantitative course offerings and pursue advanced work in their chosen subject area through the directed studies option. However, we have designed the majority of our courses to meet the needs of students interested in an Economics major as a foundation for careers in fields such as law, diplomacy, management, or financial services who may not require or desire as high a level of mathematical sophistication.
