What is the "best" economic system? What is the economic role of government? Is there too much pollution? Why are people poor; why are they unemployed? Does money cause inflation? Does the national debt? Is free trade good? Why study Economics? At UNK, Economics provides tools for analyzing such questions.
Economics gives a solid background for many jobs and professions. The department aims its programs toward instilling in students those qualifications sought by prospective employers -- programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Economics.
For students interested in agriculture, the department offers a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness. This program emphasizes training in economics, business, agribusiness, and agricultural sciences. Students majoring in Agribusiness have taken positions in areas such as agricultural lending, sales, crop consulting, farm and ranch management, and with government agencies.
Considering a major in education? The nation-wide shortage of educators with a background in economics has caused a door to be opened for education majors. UNK Department of Economics offers a Bachelor of Arts in Education with an Economics 7-12 Teaching Subject endorsement.
In addition to preparing students for a major, the department offers a wide range of courses used to support other major areas in the Natural and Social Sciences. The programs in economics and business complement each other and prepare the student for many career fields including teaching. Economics is an excellent choice for students heading toward law school.
