Graduate Program
The Department of Economics has a graduate program leading to the PhD degree. The PhD program has three goals: to advance economic knowledge through an intensive and balanced research program, to develop the research skills essential to independent study of current economic problems, and to provide the training needed for effective teaching of economics.
The department has 31 faculty members. There are research programs of long standing and of international prominence in several subject areas. Research areas in which the Department of Economics has particular strength include:
Applied microeconomics
Labor economics
Urban and regional economics
Comparative systems and development economics
Econometrics
International economics
Macroeconomic theory
Microeconomic theory
Advanced microeconomic theory
Experimental economics
Game Theory
There are approximately 60 graduate students in residence. Students are accepted directly for PhD study and a a master''s degree is not a prerequisite. The department recruits promising students from the United States and around the world. The great majority of PhD students receive financial support from the University. Previous study of economics can be helpful, but is not essential. The PhD program is quanitiatively oriented, and students are expected to be able to use linear algebra and the calculus of several variables in their first-year courses.
