Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute,Economics

  The Program

Rensselaer's department of economics offers a unique focus in Ecological Economics. This fast growing field offers unique opportunities for linking economics to new theories and applications in the natural sciences and other social sciences. We offer two graduate degrees, a Masters degree in Economics, and a Ph.D. in Ecological Economics. Our Ph.D program requires 90 credits beyond the bachelor's degree, and 60 beyond the masters degree. The minimum residency requirement for our Ph.D program is 45 credit hours. A doctoral dissertation accounts for 15 to 30 credit hours and is an integral part of our program. Our Masters program requires 30 credits beyond the Bachelors degree with a minimum of 24 credit hours in residency. An applied masters thesis can account for 6 credit hours.

Our core requirements consist of three courses: Advanced Macroeconomics, Advanced Microeconomics and Quantitative Methods. All three courses emphasize applications as an important compliment to the study of economic theory. Other course options may include Environmental Economics, Natural Resource Economics, Cost-Benefit Analysis, Public Finance, Government Regulation or Industrial Organization. These can be combined with courses offered in other departments and schools at Rensselaer so you can tailor your course of study to your own personal interests and career plans.

  Graduate Research in Economics

Our Master's program is designed to meet the needs of traditional as well as returning students who wish to integrate their professional experience with additional training in economics. This degree requires 30 credit hours, six of which may be an in-depth research project with a decidedly applied focus. The program is specifically designed for students who wish to tailor an advanced degree to their career goals. In addition to a solid grounding in economic theory, you are able to develop in-depth knowledge in applied economics in a particular area of interest.
