  INTRODUCTION

Economics deals with how societies utilize scarce resources, organize production, and distribute goods and services. The study of economics develops the critical thinking ability of students and provides students with analytical tools that can be applied to a wide range of problems. These problems range from personal decision making (such as purchase, employment, and investment choices) to business decisions (such as product pricing, cost analysis, and forecasting) to issues that affect society as a whole (such as unemployment, inflation, crime, health care, taxation, and income distribution). The analytical foundation provided by a major in economics allows considerable flexibility in terms of career choice and graduate education as well as developing a level of economic literacy that enables future voters to make informed choices between competing public policy proposals to deal with the pressing social problems of the time. A Bachelor's degree in economics qualifies students for management positions in both business and government and teaching at the secondary level. The economics major is also excellent preparation for law school, a graduate business program, or advanced education in economics.

The Economics Department at Rider offers a variety of degree options. A Bachelor of Science degree in economics is offered through the College of Business Administration. A Bachelor of Arts degree is also available to students in the College of Liberal Arts, Education and Sciences. In addition, a minor in economics and a minor in Health Care Administration is available to all undergraduates at the University. The Department provides the opportunity for students to undertake a structured research project (Senior Research Seminar) on individually selected topics. The Department also offers a number of courses on a variety of international topics enabling students to achieve a concentration in international business. The different degree tracks and the wide range of economics electives allow students to customize a program of study based on individual interest and career goals. Economics majors enjoy the benefits of small-sized classes and close interaction with faculty. Cocurricular and extracurricular activities for economics majors include an economics club, an economics honorary society (Omicron Delta Epsilon), an internship program, and the ability to participate in projects undertaken by the Office of Regional Economic Analysis (which is administered by a faculty member in the Economics Department).
