Roanoke College,Business Adminstration, Economics

  Department Goals

The Department of Business Administration and Economics offers three degree programs: the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), the Bachelor of Arts in Economics (BA), and the Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems (BS). Each of these degrees, as every degree at Roanoke College, requires the completion of the General Education Curriculum in the Liberal Arts. Each of our degree programs has as its fundamental objective the intellectual, personal, and moral development of the young women and men who select our programs. In pursuit of this objective, we seek to graduate persons who are poised, mature, responsible, competent, knowledgeable, and enterprising. Between the strong and varied teachings of the Roanoke College General Education Curriculum, and the more specialized and technical content of our department major programs, we are confident of achieving our objective.

  General Information

Those who major in business today are taking on a highly competitive and challenging field which requires thorough training in order to survive and prosper. Not only do business graduates need to be good with figures, they must be skilled personnel managers, and able to keep an intuitive finger on the pulse of a world that keeps a hecticpace.

The Roanoke College Business Administration Department has a strong curriculum and an experienced faculty which has consistently produced top-notch graduates who have entered the world of business to meet with great success. Ranked among the top colleges and universities producing business executives in the United States, the department has designed a demanding program that gives its graduates an edge in the often cutthroat world of business.

The most popular major at the college, the Bachelor of Business Administration program offers students a solid background in the major functional areas of business: accounting, management, marketing, finance, and economics. As the computer has become an essential and integrated part of business life, Roanoke College prepares its students by offering a wide range of courses in computer science and requires the use of computers in other course work as well. The department hosts its own personal computer lab for the convenience of the majors and the faculty.

Many graduates of the BBA program have gone on to open their own businesses in the Roanoke Valley and in other regions. Many others are now executives, bankers, or successful investors. Often graduates choose to continue their education and have attended such fine institutions as Harvard, Wharton Business School, Northwestern, Michigan, and the University of Virginia.

The degree of Bachelor of Business Administration requires completion of 11 business courses and three economics courses. For practical experience in the business world, internships may be arranged in banks, accounting firms, computer companies, brokerage firms, and other major employers in the area. These internships provide on-the-job experience and may lead to full-time employment after graduation. Concentrations in the business administration department may be sought in the following areas: Accounting, Finance, Global Business, Healthcare Administration, Human Resource Management, or Marketing.
