Introduction
Economics is the study of the production, consumption and distribution of goods and services. Economic study attempts to clarify how the use of natural, technological and financial resources affects the lives of human beings. Students of economics at Saint Benedict’s and Saint John’s get more than the theoretical and technical background used to solve economic problems. Their liberal arts education also helps in developing the skills necessary for adapting to the rapid changes in the economic environment. Their studies stress analysis, quantitative reasoning and theoretical applications that allow them to face such issues as wage discrimination, the national debt and price wars, while also providing the skills necessary to communicate possible solutions. Economic concerns can range from the study of how a poor family survives financially to the complex study of international trade laws between countries. Those students interested in the social sciences and liberal studies frequently find that economics complements many other disciplines. Popular double-major combinations include economics and mathematics, government and English.
Career and Graduate School Opportunities
The study of economics may often be theoretical, but economists recognize that the need for employment is not. A graduate with an economics major or minor can occupy such diverse positions as stock or commodity broker, security analyst, state or federal research economist, industrial economist, public official, economic consultant, bank manager, environmental project director and college teacher. A degree in economics is a good preparation for a successful career in accounting, banking, education, insurance, investment banking, market research, real estate and securities.
CSB/SJU graduates have also found positions abroad with the Peace Corps, private firms, or foreign government agencies in Equador, Germany, Guyana, the Philippines and Zambia. Many prestigious law colleges look favorably on economics majors, especially on those who plan to practice corporate law. A significant percentage of CSB/SJU economics graduates enter MBA programs, and the number rises when those who enroll after gaining some work experience are included.
