General Information on the Master's Program in Economics
The MA program in applied economics provides students with advanced training in decision- making techniques and quantitative analysis by building on a core of applied microeconomic and econometric classes. Students learn to apply analytic methods to real-life issues, use advanced econometrics and computer software, speak effectively, and write persuasive reports. An internship program provides students with valuable work experience.
The program is designed to (1) prepare students for careers in consulting firms, multinational companies and government agencies and (2) provide advanced training in economics for students planning on entering a Ph. D. program.
Former graduate students are employed in research and policy-oriented positions in both business and government. Local employers include consulting firms, San Diego public utilities, San Diego area governments, and community colleges.
Scholarship Information
Center for Public Economics (CPE) Scholarships
Each Spring, CPE scholarships are awarded by the Department of Economics. These awards are made possible by the generous contributions of Walter Weiss, Henry Cramer, Sidney Evans, Col. Archie Girard, and other individuals and organizations. In 1998, seven awards were made ranging from $220 to $750 each.
Applications are accepted from any upper division or graduate student with a concentration in economics and an interest in public economics. Awards are based on academic merit as demonstrated in an individual's academic record and completed application form (including references and an essay).
An announcement of this award program is made early each Spring Semester and application is made directly to the Department of Economics.
University Scholarships
All current and prospective SDSU students are eligible to apply to the University Scholarship Program. The application period is normally between November and early February and applications are accepted by the SDSU Scholarship Office. This program and application process is separate from that for CPE scholarships.
Current undergraduate students must have at least a 3.50 overall GPA (or at least a 3.70 in the last 30 units of university work). Graduate students must have a 3.50 overall GPA for work completed after the bachelor's degree or, in the absence of completed postbaccalaureate units, a 3.50 overall undergraduate GPA (or at least a 3.70 GPA in the last 30 units of university work). There are other requirements for high school seniors applying as entering freshmen.
