University of North Texas,Department of Economics

Economics is an exciting field of study that offers many challenging career opportunities. Employers recognize the value of economics degrees and projections suggest an increase of 27% in jobs for economics majors.
Economics is a financially rewarding field with average annual starting salaries of economics majors with a bachelor''s degree of $31,000.
Economics is also excellent preparation for international jobs or graduate school.
The Department of Economics is home to 15 faculty members with very diverse backgrounds. This diversity allows us to offer a wide vareity of courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our faculty are involved in research and offer courses in macro and microeconomics, econometrics, international trade, health, labor, economics development, public finance, natural resource economics, industrial organization, and public choice.
Our undergraduate program has three different degree plans that can be tailored to meet your academic interests. Our advanced courses are taught by regular faculty in small sections that average between 20 and 40 students. Our faculty are committed to quality instruction and regularly receive teaching honors from our students. For more information about the undergraduate program, please contact or e-mail our advisor, Todd Jewell.
Our graduate program typically has about 40 students that are split across four degree programs. At any point in time, about half of our students are funded by teaching fellowships, teaching assistantships, and tutor or grader positions. The remaining students are eligible for scholarships from the department and the graduate school. Many of our graduate students work full time and take their courses in the evening. To accomodate our working students, all graduate courses are offered in the evening at least every other year. For additional information about our graduate program, contact or e-mail our graduate advisor Mike McPherson.
I know that finding the right job upon graduating is a high priority for all students. The Department of Economics has a member of our faculty that serves as Placement Officer for our majors. Mike Nieswiadomy assists students in writing resumes, coordinates internships, sets up job interviews, and serves as a clearing house for job openings. We have an excellent record of placing our graduates in business, government, and academic positions.
The UNT Economics Department is large enough to offer a variety of courses yet small enough that our students receive individual attention from faculty members. We are proud of our long tradition of close relationships between students and teachers. We also stay actively involved in research and community outreach through our Center for Economic Education, Labor and Industrial Relations Institute, Center for Environmental Economics Studies and Research, and the Center for International Economic Studies and Research. I hope you find the information on our hompage useful and that you will contact me if I can be of further assistance.
